The Story of Vina Morales

Sharon Garcia Magdayao is a Filipina singer and actress. She is famous as Vina Morales in show business. She is one of the stars with ultimate staying power and one of the most versatile performers in the country. From a talented youngster, she transformed into a multi-media artist as she is now. She is not just as singer but also an excellent dancer and good dramatic actress. She is the older singer a famous teen actress, Shaina Magdayao.

Vina Morales was born in Bogo, Cebu on October 17, 1975. Her father Enrique is native from Cebu and her mother is of Spanish descent. She was named Sharon after Vina’s idol. She has three sisters namely Sheila, Sheryl and Shaina Magdayao.

Since childhood, Vina wanted to be a singer and when she’s nine years old, she joined the church choir which eventually brought her big break. The parish priest Fr. Fritz Malinao is a songwriter and when he discovered her endowment, he asked her to sing one of his composition for Cebu Pop Music Festival. The song was named Paglaum and won the Grand Prize as well as the Best Interpreter for its singer.

Viva Films representatives saw her excellent performance and was impressed. They offered her immediately a singing and acting contract. The family entrusted their child’s career to Mina del Rosario of Viva Records. And it was Mina who christened her Vina, named after Divina Vanessa del Rosario, the firsy child of Vic del Roario and Mina Aragon of Viva Films. Vina is also a combination of Vic and Mina.

She released her debut album entitled Easy To Love on 1995. The album contained middle-of-the-road, easy-listening songs such as “Coz’ I’ll Say Yes”, “So Easy To Love You”, “Tell Me You Love Me” and “Wag Na Wag”. Its not a bad album for a first timer but many expects improvement of her in the future.

Vina played her first movie, Nakagapos na Puso as the niece of Tonton Gutierrez. Sharon Cuneta, Vina’s idol and namesake was starred in the same movie. She then began accepting more mature and bold roles during her late teens such as in Utol Kong Hoodlum with Robin Padilla. She also starred as a dual role in Anghel Na Walang Langit with Ariel Rivera playing two look-alike young women with different personalities.

Her role as Sarah Balabagan, a young muslim who killed her employer in United Arab Emirates after raping her was one of the most challenging and controversial roles. the UAR government ogjected the show but lter on, it was filmed and shown eraning Vina three Best Actress nominations.

While her career is going well, she kept on singing, recording her albums and performing live concert. Her first love is singing undeniably and her albums, earning her several awards and nomination can prove this. After a two-year break in recording, Vina released on March 2004 her latest album entitled Mamahalin Ka Niya under Star Records. It is a collection of love songs including Paano Kaya Magtatago co-written with Piolo Pascual and the music was composed by Arnel de Pano.

For a couple of years, Vina is now an international artist with series of shows in US and Canada together with Martin Nievera on 2002. Vina Released was her own successful multi-city US tour and Vina’s Hot in 2003.

She does not limit herself to singing but herself a dancer doing several high-energy dance numbers at each show. She was the first Filipino chosen to sing at New York International Music Festival held in Palms Hotel in Las Vegas on 2003. She got a standing ovation and performed five songs.

In addition to her acting career, she played Elvira, the mother of Maria Flordeluna in Maria Flordeluna, ABS-CBN’s TV series on 2007. On August of the same year, she represent Philippines at the 2007 IKON Asean singing contest with contemporaries from Malaysia and Indonesia during the final night on August 12. She brought home the solo title and the band Kjwan took the group title.

She is currently visible in ASAP ’08 of ABS-CBN as host and performer. Vina was linked romantically with Miguel Zubiri, a Filipino politician.
