The Story of Tootsie Guevarra
Emma Therese Pinga is a Filipino singer. She is widely known as ”Tootsie” in Philippine music scene. She started as a child singer, recording artist and an actress. Among of her idols were Lea Salonga, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. She looked up on Jennifer Lopez when it comes to fashion sense.
Tootsie was born in Manila on August 17 to a certain Ma. Teresa Macalanda Pinga and Emmanuel Guevara Pinga. Her real name ”Emma Therese” was derived from her parents’ name, Emmanuel and Teresa and her nickname ”Tootsie” were from Totoy and Tess. She was the fifth of six siblings. The older four namely Mary Martine, Jonas, Victor Emmanuel, and Gian Anthony is now living in U.S. Only Tootsie and Tynee live in the Philippines.
At a very early age, Tootsie’s inclination to music was discovered. Her father was a music lover himself and trained and honed the God-given talents of his young Tootsie. Aside from singing, he also taught her to dance such as cha-cha, boogie, swing and waltz. The complete package includes teaching of performance skills, diction and pronunciation.
Tootsie studied her Prep at Assumption Iloilo and a consistent music class leader. As the sister saw her ability, they advised her parents to enroll in a music school. She finished her elementary education at St Theresa’s College in Cebu as a consistent honor student. She graduated high school in St.Scholastica Marikina. She graduated college with the degree of Hotel and Restaurant Management in St. Paul University as top 20 of her class and also a thesis awardee.
Her first exposure to television started when she is four years old. Her mother called in to a certain local radio station and let young Tootsie sang over the phone. TV producers searched for the child and was amazed to see a young child. She was tapped to sing for an episode in welcoming balikbayans to Cebu.
Later, she won the Yamaha Musicmate Competition as the regional champion. Being discovered by bigwigs of Vicor Records in Cebu, she flew to Manila and recorded her LP entitled Nais Kong Umawit. She became a part of That’s Entertainment, which served as a jumpstart for many talented artist. She was managed by Raul Laurente who managed Manilyn Reynes and Billy Joe Crawford at that time.
On 1990, her debut album was released entitled Kinabukasan Ko under VicorRecords. That’s Entertainment stopped its operation on 1996. But this does not worry Tootsie Guevarra. She signed a contract with Star Records and released Pasulyap-Sulyap the following year. The album gained its Gold status with its title track as its carrier single which was written by Vehnee Saturno.
1998 marked the released of her Double Platinum album entitled Kaba which was produced by Vehnee Saturno. This was succeeded by an album entitled Sa Puso which attained Gold Record status. The repackaged album of Pangako Sa ‘Yo was the last one with Star Records.
Aside from recording, Tootsie also engages in acting and concert performances. Among of her acting stints were as an antagonist of Kahit Kailan and also an antagonist in Habang Kapiling Ka. She looked up to acting stalwarts like Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino and Nora Aunor. Her concerts were held in different parts of the country and in different venues abroad like U.S., Australia and Japan.
In spite of her successes, she did not felt contented with her talent. She took voice lessons with Kitchie Molina from UP.
