The Story and Songs of Sugarfree

Sugarfree is a band of three engaging in pop and rock genres. Its members are Kaka Quisimbing as its new drummer, Jalton Taguibao on bass and Ebe Dancel on guitars and its vocalist. Its former member was Mitch Singson who was the original drummer. The band’s influences are likes of Popsicle, Oasis and Radiohead. The band’s humble beginning was on year 1999. Ebe has undergone several bands until he met Jal and Mitch. The three wrote songs easily, play underground and attained admirers. They have their permanent stay in “Admit One in Freedom Bar”. The original members released their 2 albums and the third one features their new drummer Kaka.

It success can be traced on year 2003. “Telepono”, their highly successful single was included in their debut album Sa Wakas which was silently released under EMI Philippines on January of 2003. Sugarfree recorded the 12 tracks of the album for more than a year, and out came sweet success. The album was reportedly sold out in a span of 11 minutes. Its simple melodies and lyrics, their easy-going attitude and their styles are attractive to the listeners and easily captured the hearts of the believers. Since then, Sugarfree performed countless gigs over the country and won different awards for their songs.

For more than a year, Sugarfree again released their second album, Dramachine on July 2004 still under EMI Philippines. Now, its album contains happy and happy-go-lucky songs, totally opposite from the first one. The album eventually gained its gold status on September of the following year. The album contains strong singles such as “Hari Ng Sablay”, “Kwarto”, “Makita Kang Muli” etc. Two of the newest singles from the album are worth to be proud of. “Makita Kang Muli” was chosen as the original soundtrack of ABS-CBN’s Panday. It charted in radio stations in no time. The song was written by Cymbee Antiporda and was being arranged by Jimmy Antiporda. “Hari Ng Sablay” is written by Ebe himself. Kwarto was part of the soundtrack of Pinoy Blonde.

Due to its success, EMI Philippines decided to release a Repackaged Album of Dramachine. It was set to public on January of 2006. The videos of several singles such as “Hari Ng Sablay”, “Tulog Na”, “Kwarto”, “Sinta”, and “Prom” were included in the said release. The band gained recognition from singles such as “Telepono”, “Mariposa”, “Hari Ng Sablay”, “Prom”, “Kwarto” and many more from their albums Sa Wakas and Dramachine.

After 6 years in Sugarfree, Mitch leaved the band and was replaced by a new talent from Cebu, Kaka. The band was almost at the point of breaking up, Jal wanted to pursue law and Mitch leaved the band. Fortunately, Jal was convinced by the songs written by Ebe after an encounter with Robin Rivera. The third and the latest album of Sugarfree featuring their new drummer was released on November 24, 2006 entitled Tala-Arawan under EMI Philippines. It was produced by Robin Rivera, who was also the producer of Eraserheads. “Kung Ayaw Mo Sa Akin” was the first single of the album and was aired in 35 radio stations nationwide. It was its number 3-position on MYX’s daily top ten. The album contains 12 new songs plus a bonus track, “Batang-Bata Ka Pa”, which was used in Kami nAPO Muna Apo tribute album.
