The Story of Rico Puno

Enrico de Jesus Puno is a popular pop singer from the Philippines. He is famous as Rico J. Puno and credited as one of the pioneer-promoter of original Filipino music. He is known for his raspy voice, energetic singing style and humor while performing on stage. Sometimes referred as Rico J. and as The Total Entertainer, he remained one of the busiest performers here and abroad.

Rico was born on February 13, 1953 in Manila, Philippines. He is a blessing to Felipe Puno Sr. and Corazon J. Puno. His elementary education was at the Burgos Elementary School, followed by his high school in Mapa High School. He earned the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Philippine School of Busines Administration. Though, a degree holder, he dreamed of becoming a singer. He owned Corix, a karaoke bar located at Vito Cruz Extension, Manila and manages a trucking business. In 1998, he was elected as a Makati City Councilor. He has two siblings namely, Tozca and Rocs.

He started his singing career by performing at folk houses and clubs in Metro manila. Rico met and performed with The Temptation on 1975. Vicor Records executives later noticed Rico’s talent. “Love Won’t Let Me Wait”, was his first record but “The Way We Were” was his first big hit.

His concert in 1978 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines dubbed as “Rico In Concert Show” launched him as one of the foremost Philippine pop stars. His concerts in Araneta Coliseum and tours in United States broke records in terms of audience attendance. This made him a sought-after product endorser including San Miguel Beer in 1970’s. Rico also represented Philippines at Tokyo Music Festival on 1979 with his song, “Lupa”. Hit songs of Rico included “Kapalaran”,” Buhat”, “Macho Guwapito”, “Lupa”, “Damdamin”, “May Bukas Pa”, “Ang Tao’y Marupok”, “Magkasuyo Buong Gabi” with Elsa Chan and “You Don’t Have To Be A Star” in his Filipino rendition. He’s doing performances in the Philippines and outside the country like Canada, Dubai, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia etc.

Aside from singing, he also had his noontime variety show entitled Lunch Date of GMA Network from 1986-1987. In RPN 9, he headlined Chibugan Na with Hajji Alejandro from 1994-1995.

The compilation of songs by Rico J was released on 1994 entitled Kapalaran. The album included songs as “Kapalaran”, “Buhat”, “Ang Tao’y Marupok” and the remakes of international songs as “One Last Memory” and “The Greatest Love Of All

. Though its lyrics are meaningful, the music is plain and boring. However, he puts passion in the performances and his sincerity is recognized and appreciated.

In 1998, Rico J. Puno-OPM Timeless Collection was released under the label OctoArts/EMI. It is a collection of songs performed by him from 1981- 1986 including “Got To Be Careful”, “Together Forever”, “Hanggang Langit” and “The Great Performer”.

He was reunited with other Greatest Hitmakers in the Philippine music scene such as Hajji Alejandro, Rey Valera, Nonoy Zuñiga and Marco Sison. Viva Concerts, Greatest Hits series in Manila helped maintain Rico’s popularity and other performers.

In 2001, he released his album Aliw under the label Musiko with the carrier single “Kay Hirap Mong Limutin”. It included songs such as “Siguro Mahal Kita”, “Sabihin Mo Sa Akin”, “Baby, Ang Ganda Mo”, “Ganiyan Bang Lahat Ang Mga Babae” and “Sorry Ka Na Lang”.

On 2005, he collaborated in the album Ultraelectromagneticjam of Sony BMG Music Philippines.
