The Story and Songs of Pops Fernandez
Pops Fernandez is one of the most well-known and enduring Filipino vocalist. She currently one of the most popular concert artist thus garnering her the name Concert Queen in Philippine music scenery. She is also an actress and an excellent songwriter. Born on December 12, 1966, she was named Maria Cielito Lukban Fernandez by her mother Dulce Lukban and her father, Eddie Fernandez, a Filipino action star.
She started her singing career very early at the age of 16 years old. In 1981, she signed contract with OctoArts. She released her first self-titled LP Pops in 1982. In 1983, Pops Fernandez In Love Album was released. Other albums such as Heading for the Top (1984), The Best of Pops Fernandez (1986), Awesome (1990), Change (1991), Colours (1996), Nagmamahal Pa Rin Sa’Yo and Moments (both 1999), Shindig Live and The Story of Pops Fernandez (both 2001), The Way I Feel Inside (2002), When Words Are Not Enough (2004), Silver and Don’t Say Goodbye (both 2006).
Together with Martin Nievera, they hosted “Penthouse Live!”, a TV variety series. Pops can attract people and called her the “Concert Queen”. She gained her mammoth popularity with a wink of an eye, having her face displayed in different magazines. “Martin and Pops Twogether” replaced Penthouse Live! after five years. Martin and Pops eventually ended up marrying each other and was able to produce two siblings, Robin and Ram. But their relationship doesn’t last long and separated in 1998.
Pops become one of the host of “ASAP” together with Martin Nievera, her husband, Dayanara Torres and Ariel Rivera. She toured not just here in Philippines but also conducted international tours and concerts. She reached U.S., Japan, Hong Kong, Guam and Italy. Pops is unquestionably a Concert Queen. Her Shindig concert at ULTRA can be a proof with thousands of people watching and admiring her talent.
Not just a singer, Pops is bestowed with other talents as acting and composing. She proved her excellence in the film “Linlang”. This was followed by “Gusto Ko Nang Lumigay” and another movie entitled “Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah Ze Muveeh” wih Zsa Zsa Padilla, the Divine Diva. Pops made appearances occasionally in ASAP, a variety show of ABS-CBN.
In spite of her long sojourn in show business, she’s still visible in Philippine showbiz. Lately, she had a show with Kuh Ledesma in Las Vegas. She is so busy that she had no time and no plan of reuniting with Martin Nievera. Her December concert was held in Araneta Coliseum.
