Piolo Pascual
The Story of Piolo Pascual
Piolo Jose Nonato Pascual is a popular, award-winning and multi-talented artist from the Philippines. He is best identified simply as an actor named ”Piolo Pascual’. Aside from being an actor, Piolo is also a songwriter, a concert performer, a host, endorser and a platinum-selling recording artist and singer. He is considered one of the most bankable stars of the Philippines.
Piolo was born on January 12, 1977 with a descent of a Eurasian. His grandfather in paternal side was a German American while her grandmother was Spanish-Austronesian. His father, Philip Herzig later died when he was sixteen years old. Because of his dad’s departure, he was much closer to his mom Amelia on his teenage years. He has a son named Inigo from previous non-showbiz relationship.
He was part of Teatro Tomasino, a student theatrical group of University of Santo Tomas. His early appearances in TV include “ATBP”, ABS-CBN’s educational show and “That’s Entertainment”, GMA’s Network’s musical variety show.
Piolo’s early career was a hard one and when nothing seemed successful, he packed his bags and left the country for U.S. with his mother. He even left his studies in Sto. Tomas and worked in the Emergency Rooms in California. However, his interest in acting never departed him. After getting an offer in ABS-CBN and became a talent of Star Circle, currently called Star Magic.
His first recognition happened when he appeared on primetime series “Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako” playing a villain which garnered him an Asian TV Awards in 1999 as Best Drama Actor nomination.
He also ventured to films and movies appearing on the likes of “The Untold Story:Vizxonde Massacre 2-God Have Mercy On Us” (1994) and “Batang PX” (1997). His big break in films happened when he accepted the lead role of “Lagarista” in 2000. He received his first Gawad Urian nomination as Best Actor. The movie was exhibited in different film festivals in Toronto, Pusan and Hong Kong.
His pairing with Judy Ann Santos in “Kahit Isang Saglit” turned him into instant sensation and appeared in several hit soap operas like “Esperanza” and “Sa Puso Ko Iingatan Ka”. He did movies with her in “Bakit Di Totohanin” and “Til There Was You”.
When The Hunks was formed on 2001 in ASAP, he was one of its official members together with Jericho, Rosales, Diether Ocampo, Bernard Palanca and Carlos Agassi. However, the group disbanded when Piolo was launched as main host of “ASAP” on 2004 with Gary V., Zsa Zsa Padilla, Kuh Ledesma and Vina Morales. Since then, he was an ultimate heartthrob. He starred his first endorsement in the huge Sprite campaign and a schoolgirl shouted at him, “I Love You Piolo”. It was no other than Toni Gonzaga.
He fame as an actor rose when he played as a rebel during Marcos regime named Jules Bartolome with Vilma Santos and Christopher de Leon on “Dekada ’70”. He won as Best Supporting Actor for his role.
Surprisingly, he gave singing a try and released his debut album entitled Piolo. People found it laughable but Piolo proved them wrong as his album reached its platinum status. Singles like “Kailangan Kita”, “Till There Was You” and “Ikaw Ang Buhay Ko” were some of the most played and requested songs on radio making them top-ten of radio charts nationwide. His concert in Araneta Coliseum is also a sold-out one.
In addition to his brimming success, he again released his second album entitled My Gift and gained platinum status in less than two months of its release. His singles from the album like “My Gift”and “Bakit Hindi Na Lang Ikaw” peaked the number 1 in radio charts. He also held his first successful major concert, My Gift in Araneta Coliseum.
His movie with Claudine Barreto in “Milan” was one of the 2004’s highly acclaimed movies of the year and a box-office hit. In “Mangarap Ka”, he played as Oslec, a modern day Robin Hood aired in ABS-CBN.
Together with his rising personality, he received rumors as well like many other artists. He was issued as one of the males in an alleged homosexual sex video. ABS-CBN Star Magic and Piolo sought help from PAMI against GMA 7 Startalk, who aired the said rumor. However, the program did not conclude if Piolo is one of them.
But in spite of the scandal, he released his third album entitled Renditions: Songs of Louie Ocampo. The album featured the collaboration of Piolo and his master songwriter Louie Ocampo. It was released on 2005. His tandem with Bea Alonzo on “Dreamboy” was a hit also.
On 2006, Piolo’s compilation album entitled Piolo Pascual: Platinum Hits was released. The repackaged version of the said album was released that year also with bonus track, Ikaw Lamang. He also paired with Judy Ann Santos in “Don’t Give Up On Us”. Other film of the year was “Kagat Ng Dilim”. He was also seen in “Sa Piling Mo” with Judy Ann Santos.
His fifth album was released on 2007 entitled Timeless under Star Records. It recently reached its Triple Platinum Status. And in celebration of his 10th anniversary in show business, his concert in Araneta Coliseum dubbed as TEN was held on November that year. He was lead role in “Walang Kapalit” with Claudine Barreto.
