All About Nora Aunor

Nora Cabaltera Villamayor is a multi-awarded Filipino actress, a singer and producer. She is as ”Nora Aunor” and regarded as the only “Superstar” in the Philippine show business. In the music scene, she is considered as the Lady With Golden Voice.

Nora Aunor was born on May 21, 1953 in Iriga, Camarines Sur. She was used in selling cold water along the rail tracks of Iriga City. Her turning point and realization of her dream commenced when Nora joined the prestigious talent search named “Tawag ng Tanghalan”. It is the most popular national amateur singing contest of the country and she won as the grand champion on 1967.

On late 1960’s, Nora Aunor appeared in numerous films and did several stage plays and concerts. Her films were shown internationally in countries like Cannes, Berlin, Moscow, New York, Chicago, Hawaii, Toronto, Rotterdam, Cairo, Penang, Brussels etc. She received three international best actress awards and countless local awards and several industry citation during the time.

Nora Aunor was teamed with Tirso Cruz III and their love-tem was dubbed Guy and Pip. Theirs was one of the greatest love team in the 1970’s- 1980’s. Other Aunor’s leading men include Edgar Mortiz, Manny de Leon, Don Johnson, an Indian actor & singer Sajid Khan, Joseph Estrada and Christopher de Leon.

Nora Aunor was married and a mother of five to a Philippine actor, Christopher de Leon. However, in late 90’s, their marriage was annulled.

Nora Aunor is several television programs. She hosted Superstar, the longest musical variety show in the Philippine television. She had her weekly drama show entitled Makulay Na Daigdig ni Nora. On 1991, Nora had her first major concert dubbed “Handog” at the Araneta Colisseum. On her 50th birthday, Nora did another major concert entitled “Gold”, which served as a reunion of all Nora Aunor’s fans. Currently, Nora has been doing several shows and concerts around the world.

Dubbed as the Lady with the Golden Voice, Nora unsurprisingly recorded more than a two dozen albums and singles. On 1968, she was contracted with Alpha Records upon Carmen Soriano’s recommendation. This marked the beginning of Golden Age of Local Recording.

Her album reached either gold or platinum. She holds the record for both gold singles and most recorded singles in the country. For seven years in Alpha Records, she was able to set all-time high record sales which up to this day has not been surpassed.

As an artist with most singles released, Nora approximately recorded more than 500 singles. Her cover of Pearly Shell was one of the biggest-selling singles in the country.

Nora Aunor is specially known for her closeness with her fans and supporters. Her fans were collectively called as Noranians. During the time, her rival was Vilma Santos and the latter’s fans were dubbed as Vilmanians.

In recent years, Nora spent most of her time in California or Nevada, United States though she retained her Philippine citizen. On 2004, Gavin Newsom, mayor of San Francisco declared Nora Aunor’s birthday as the Nora Aunor Day in the city and country of San Francisco in gratitude for her numerous achievements as an artist and entertainer in the Philippines.

On March 30, 2005, Aunor was under arrest for allegedly bringing with her 7.7 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride inside her luggage. She was released after posting bail worth $10,000. On April 2005, she pleaded not guilty before the court but on March 29, 2006, Aunor pleaded guilty and underwent rehabilitation programs. Judge James Dabney dismissed the case after Aunor completed an 18-month rehabilitation program. She had passed over 40 drug tests.
