MOJOFLY is a Filipino band offering more radio-friendly, pop-leaning alternative to rock for the youths of today. The band was formed on 1999 by Ricci Gurango after he left ”Hungry Young Poets” as bassist. The band’s lead singer Kitchie Nadal promoted some songs such as Another Day and Scooter Boy to national recognition. The band released two albums; a debut album entitled Birth Day on 1999 and was followed by A Million Stories released on 2002. Both albums were released under the label of Sony Music Philippines. But sadly, on May of 2003, Kitchie left the band to pursue a solo career.
Not a bit discouraged, MOJOFLY did not waste time in searching for a new lead. For only few days, they introduced Lougee Basabas as the new frontwoman of the band.
Maria Lourdes Grace Basabas is fondly called “Lougee” by her peers. She is studying at Asumption College taking Mass Communications. Before joining MOJOFLY, she was a part of Kaya, Ryan Cayabyab’s pop teen-group which released an album under BMG Records Pilipinas. She was also a previous member of the band Superlooj. MOJOFLY was brought to life when she replaced “Kitchie” as a new vocalist. Her fascinating looks paved way for her to be featured in different print ads and TV commercial such as Mitsubishi, Pepsi, Jollibee and Ayala Malls.
Allan Edward Chacon Elgar is the band’s guitarist and commonly called Allan Elgar. He strived hard with different bands throughout high school years until he landed to Loudwater, a band that played regularly at club Dredd. In 1996, he, together with his brother Michael joined the Jett Pangan Group. There he met “Ricci” of Hungry Young Poet. On 2000, Elgar brothers formed 7Foot Jr. which was handled by Karin Araneta, MOJOFLY’s manager. At the same time, he managed his time with Star Records as “Ad-Prom Manager” from 2000-2002 and led homeroom classes at Ateneo de Manila Grade School from 2002-2006.
MojoFly - Mata
Angelo Alihaj Diaz Alejandro handles the drums yet he’s a guitarist by heart. He is commonly called as Ali Alejandro. Ali once appeared in local tele-novela on GMA but later realized that showbiz is not his cup of tea. MOJOFLY is his major endeavor in music scene though he played several bands already.
At the end of the year 2003, the band joined the “indie” bandwagon with EP entitled MOJOFLY. The comeback hit Mata and the own rendition of Lougee’s Minamalas clearly described the ambitious sound of new MOJOFLY.
On June 2005, the band released an LP entitled MOJOFLY Now under independent label luKas Music of Karin Araneta, artist manager and Music publisher. The said release was distributed throughout the country by EMI Music Philippines. Lougee also engaged in songwriting and gained credits through her advanced compositions.
MOJOFLY promoted MOJOFLY Now Special Edition on August 2006. This is a 2-disc package and an A-VCD featuring live tracks from their first major concert held at Music Museum on September 2005 and the 3D-animated music video of Tumatakbo. MOJOFLY was the first local artist who made a full 3D animation in Philippine Music Video history. It was previewed on April 2006 at the 19th Singapore International Film Festival. The said video was awarded as Best Animated Video & Favorite Video on August 2006 at MTV Pilipinas Video Music Awards.
Aside from being the MTV Lokal Artist-of-the-Month on March 2005, the band boasts the list of endorsement from Del Monte Pizza Sauce to Penshoppe and Cream Silk Conditioners. The theme songs Choose and Girl Power, Pink Power from Cream Silk brought MOJOFLY’s sound and Lougee’s image to every household.
