The Story of Lani Misalucha
Lani Misalucha is a famous Filipina singer. She did pop, rock, jazz, soul, rhythm and blues and operatic arias. She was hailed as ”Asia’s Nightingale” with Lyric Cloltura Soprano voice. She was dubbed also as the “Multiplex Queen” and the “New Siren of the Strip” on her arrival in Las Vegas last 2004 and can imitate known divas as Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, Toni Braxton, Beyonce Knowles, Shania Twain, Britney Spears etc.
From musical family, Lani was born. Her father Benjamin Bayot has an operatic tenor and her mother Esperanca Dimalantais a colotratura soprano. Her sisters May and Karyl are also musicians by heart, a band vocalist and an actress respectively. Her brother Novi and Osi play the guitar and the piano. Lani studied Rafael Palma Elementary School and in PCU Union High School. She graduated from the Philippine Christian University with a degree of Business Management. After obtaining her degree, she submitted herself as a wife to Noli Misalucha, an IT expert and a mother of two, Lian and Louven.
Lani won the top prize in a Gospel Music Competition only she’s still 16 of age. At the age of 20, she sang with the Andress Bonifacio Choir of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. She then joined different bands either as the vocalist or a back-up singer only. She begin with the group Prelude and then to Law of Gravity with Bodjie Dasig as the bandleader. Bodjie gave Lani her first single entitled “More Than I Should” on 1993. She also recorded “Sakayan Ng Jeep” whose own rendition of Nikki Gil was made. Her voice earned a living for using for numerous commercial jingles and karaoke tapes and also grabbed the name as “Multiplex Queen”. She made a breakthrough with her song “Ang Iibigin Ay Ikaw” which was writtem by Jimmy Borja. The song became a finalist at the MetroPop Song Festival.
On 1997, Lani released her debut album entitled More Than I Should under Alpha Records with the carrier single of the same title written by Bodjie Dasig. The album earned 12 Katha Award nominations in 1997. It was outside the country, on 1998, when she won the Minuro Endo Best Interpreter/Singer Award at the 3rd Asian Song Festival and her piece Handle With Care won the silver in the Best Original Song category.
Misalucha transferred to Viva Records on 1999 and released another album Tunay Na Mahal with the carrier single of the same name written by Freddie Saturno. She also covered the 1952 hit, “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” and topped the chart of the year. Finally, she won the Grand Prize in MetroPop Song Festival with her interpretation of “Can’t Stop Loving You”. She was praised for her acting and singing in the play Rama and Sita where she starred the lead role of Sita.
Her third album All Heart was released on 2000. It is a collection of love songs with “One More Time” by Dodjie Simon as the carrier single. It included some songs as “Ang Lahat Ng Ito Ay Para Sa Iyo” by Venee Saturno, “Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin” of Jimmy Borja and “Save This Heart” of Trina Belamide.
On 2001, she hosted in SOP (Sobrang Okey Pare), a Sunday noontime show. Her first major concert on September in Araneta Coliseum dubbed as “Lani Misalucha, The Crossover Live Tour” was packed by 18,000 fans. The repeated concert of two nights held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines was proved to be very successful. Her concert extends to the different parts of the country and outside the country. Mayor Williw L. Brown Jr. of San Francisco gave recognition to Lani’s talent as an artist when he declared August 17 as Lani Misalucha Day.
On June 2003, she released Loving You, her fourth album featuring singles “Tila” and “Malaya Ka Na” by Liza Diy and Jimmy Antiporda. On the same year, she began Celebrity Turns, a show with Michael V.
In 2004, her whole family move to United States and was granted a visa as an ”Alien of Extraordinary Ability”. On 2006, a new self-titled album under Universal Records was released. The album included her rendition of Hold Me (Whitney Houston), Someone In The Dark (Michael Jackson), Always and Forever (Luther Vandross), All Is Fair In Love (Stevie Wonder), Come I From The Rain (Diana Ross), A Certain Sadness (Astrud Gilberto) and i Live For Your Love (Natalie Cole). The album reached Gold to Platinum status in the Philippines within few months.
She made an appearance once in awhile in the Philippines in programs as ASAP where she promoted her homecoming concert entitled “Missing You”. On May 2007, Lani Misalucha Live Vol. 1 & 2 was re-released under the label Viva Records. On October of the same year, she fronted the Josh Groban’s Awake Tour and sang the female part of The Prayer with David Foster.
