Kyla is an award-winning singer, an actress and a model as in Philippine Show Business. She is one of the most promising singers in Philippine music industry. Being born on January 1, 1981, she was named Melanie Hernandez Calumpad by her parent in Tondo, Manila. She was hailed as the “R&B Princess of the Philippines”. She is also classified as Dramatic Coloratura Soprano because of her raspy and husky voice. Many compared her voice to Aaliyah and Tamia. She was active since 2000 until this very day.
”Tanghalan ng Kampeon” was her first singing contest but on DZRH “Hamon sa Kampeon” was her first win in 1991. She became the Grand Champion in “Tanghalan ng Kampeon” on 1993 after being a champion for seven weeks. She won the grand prize on November with the song I am Changing. She graduated her Bachelor degree of BS Mass Communication in Philippine Christian University.
On 2001, she released her 10-track album entitled Way To Your Heart under Emi Philippines. She won the MTV Video Music Awards as 2001 MTV’s Southeast Asian Viewers Choice Awardee and the only female local artist together Eraserheads and Parokya Ni Edgar.
A self-titled album Kyla with 11 tracks was released under EMI Philippines in 2002. Her third album I Will Be There was released by EMI Philippines on 2003.
On 2004, Kyle released her fourth album Not Your Ordinary Girl still under EMI Philippines. After the success of her album, she held her sold-out concert named “Not Just Your Ordinary Girl Concert” in Araneta Coliseum.
On 2006 she released her new album Beautiful Days under EMI Philippines. It contains 14 songs with its carrier single, Beautiful Days. Her latest album Heartfelt was released on 2007 by EMI Philippines.
Kyla made her mainstay in “SOP Rules” of GMA Network aired every Sunday afternoons. She currently worked together with Jonalyn Viray, Maricris Garcia and Aicelle Santos. Another, “Popstar Kids”, a talent search for potential kids aired on Q TV. She was even tasked to sing the Philippine National Anthem during “Pacquiao vs. Barrera II- Will To Win”. Also she acted as Sarah Geronimo in her life story at “Magpakailanman”.
Kyla made several collaboration with not just local but also with international artist such as Fra Lippo Lippi, Ronan Keating, Malaysian hip-hop duo Too Phat and Keith Martin, Malaysian R&B singer Ferhan and British boy-band Blue.
