The Story of Jonalyn Viray

Jonalyn Roxas Viray is a known singer as ”Jonalyn Viray”. She is the first Grand Champion of GMA’s Pinoy Pop Superstar. She noted for her vocal ability, her big soulful voice, her belting techniques and the capability to sing in the whistle register. She has the flexibility and consistency in singing different genres and is classified as a spinto coloratura soprano with more than 4 octave voice. She garnered the titled as the “Soul Princess of the Philippines”. Likes of Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Regine Velasquez and Kelly Clarkson were her admirations.

Jonalyn was born of November 15, 1989 in San Mateo, Rizal, Philippines. She is the eldest of the four children. In her very young age, she joined several contests and won first runner-up on IBC’s Birit Bulilit as a child and on MTB Teen Pop Star. She was the niece of Gammy Viray, an actor and Renzon Viray, her cousin is a musician also playing bass in the band Necrosumbra.

Her career started when she joined GMA’s first Pinoy Pop Superstar, a talent search hosted by Regine Velasquez herself and won with her rendition of “Reflection” by Christina Aguilera. She sang her rendition of “It Might Be You” on the second week and won. On the third week, she sang “Get Here” and became a fix finalist. At the finals, she sang “It Might Be You” and was chosen as one of the four finalists competing with Charmaine Piamonte, Michael Garcia and Brenan Espartines, the crowd’s favorite. Here, she sung the “Run To You” of Whitney Houston and fortunately was chosen one of the two contender with Brenan Espartines who sang “Careless Whisper” of George Michael. The two contenders both sang “My Miracle” and Jonalyn emerged victorious over Brenan. A gift certificate worth P100,000 from Belo Medical Group was among of the prizes which she used in rhinoplasty at a young age.

On 2005, GMA Records released her debut album On My Own. This first album of hers is in fact a dream come true, from a little girl aspiring to be a champ and aiming her goals to reached her destiny. This petite belter proved to everyone that she made it and worthy of the title as the Pinoy Pop Superstar Grand Champion. “Close To Where You Are” is the first song sang by Jonalyn as the grand winner. Her talent sparkles even brighter in the ten tracks of the album that highlight her vocal prowess. The album reached its certified Gold record selling almost 15, 000 copies. In the same year, Pinoy Pop Superstar (Year 1) Grand Contender’s Album were released.

Jonalyn’s own rendition of songs like “It Might Be You”, “Get Here” and “Run To You” are intended for both young and old. Her rendition of the theme song of Darna, “Di Na Mag-iisa” mesmerized the listeners.

Jonalyn competed at the prestigious World Champions of Performing Arts in Hollywood. She was awarded the Industry Award Female Vocal Solo for winning five gold medals.

She guested and appeared in several shows of GMA as Sis, Eat Bulaga, Unang Hirit, Lovely Day, Startalk, Extra-Challenge, SOP Rules etc. She’s a part also of I LUV NY starring Jolina Magdangal and Dennis Trillo and My Guardian Abby in QTV.

Now, the former dreamer sheds off its shyness and proudly wear the cloak of a certified diva.
