The Story of Michael Cruz

Michael Valentine Cruz is the real name of a singer more popularly known as Michael Cruz. He won the fourth placer in Star In A Million. Another thing worth believing for Michael is that he is openly gay, not the screaming type a discreet one. He idolizes Boy George and was inspired by the likes of international Marron 5, George Michael, Matchbox 20, No Doubt Band and local artists such as Bamboo, Kitchie Nadal, Pepe Smith and Mike Hanopol.

Michael Cruz was born on Valentine’s Day. He is considered an “apo” of Pepe Pimentel, a veteran singer-comedian because Pepe is a brother of his real grandfather in mother’s side. He is only fifteen years old when his father died who was a judge in San Juan, Metro Manila. The latter did not know he had a gay son for Michael admitted being gay to his mother when he is 16 years old. Michael studied Mass Communication at La Salle-Dasmariñas in Cavite. He stopped college to give more attention for his singing career.

Since child, he is attracted to show business and discovered an edge being a singer. His passion for singing started at the age of 13. He took trainings and voice lessons from Ryan Cayabyab. At the early age of 18, he already established a band with his schoolmates and he of course was the vocalist of the band. Two years after, Andrew de Real discovered his potentials and made him a sing-along master in The Library. Andrew owned The Library which was located in Malate, Manila where Michael eventually became a regular performer and entertainer. He also made appearances in Klownz and Zirkoh which honed his singing skills.

A famous personality, Arnell Ignacio encouraged Michael to audition for Star In A Million. Michael and Arnell were friends for more than 8 years. It started way back when Michael and his band, ”Zyncxation” performed in the campaign with the ex-mayor of Quezon City where Arnell was running for a position of a councillor. Since, the two became close friends.

As Michael auditioned for Star In A Million, one of the panel of judges asked him about his sexual preferences. Standing surprised in front of the judges, he eventually admitted he is a gay. Instead of being criticized, he was applauded for his courage which paved him to be part of Star In A Million contenders.

Being different from the rest of his counterparts, Michael is a rocker, dishing out rock tunes complete with the attitude. Unfortunately, Michael lost the title to a Big Time Belter, Frenchie Dy. He may not be the champion but Michael is making his way, building a niche for himself in the music business.

<>Ironically speaking, Michael upon his acceptance of his sexual preference made him more endearing and appealing to the audience. Girls still swooned over him. He is truly charming and very good-looking.

Michael is represented by a friend, Arnel Ignacio and co-managed by Star Records Management (STRAM). He is newly-added to the roster of STRAM. Star Records launched Michael as a solo artist through the second volume of Solo 2. Same with the first album, Mike shares limelight with other stars like Johann Escañan and British rapper R2D.

Solo boasts distinct music genres. Johann offers pop ballads, Michael put forth hard-hitting rock tunes and R2D performs rap and hip-hop music. The album was produced by a remarkable songwriter, Jonathan Manalo.

Michael’s first single off the album is the rock version of “Crazy For You”. Other tracks with signature style of Mike were “Beep Beep”, “Iglap” and “Dahil Ikaw”.

Pastures are starting to become greener for a certain Michael Cruz.
