Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengo is a Filipina singer. She is a famous with her screen name, Charice Pempengo who performs locally and internationally in an early age. She is one of the finalists of Little Big Star.
Charice Pempengo was born on May 10, 1992 in Cabuyao, Laguna, Philippines, the daughter of Raquek Relucio. The latter noticed that at Charice’s age of four, she can belt a much louder pitch of Happy Birthday than any other kids. This decided Raquel gave Charice her due voice lessons to develop her in-born talent.
At an early age of 7, Charice already was joining several singing contests locally to earn some media exposure, belting songs of Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. Charice was seen on “Birit Bulilit” of IBC 13, “Batang Kampeon” of RPN 9, “Bulilit Popstar” and “Junior Star Quest” of ABS-CBN 2. Some, she made it to grand finals but never made it on top.
Without losing hope, Charice kept on joining contest and her biggest break was when she joined “Little Big Star” of ABS-CBN. During the time, she was 12 years old and was eliminated immediately. Later, she was picked in a wild card round to re-enter competition. She worked a great deal to the grand finals and was a consistent top scorer. However, suffered the same fate from the previous contests, she lost the title and ranked third placer only.
Her fame rose through Internet which plays an important role for our daily lives. Because of this, Charice who won the third placer only of Little Big Star, became an overnight sensation when her outstanding rendition of Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You was posted on YouTube. This caught the bigwig’s attention of Ten Songs Productions in Sweden. As Charice is on her way to international fame, another Filipino artist, Arnel Pineda, a former vocalist of The Zoo is now an international artist, when the latter was picked up by an international band, Journey as their vocalist also through YouTube.
Charice travelled to Stockholm, Sweden and recorded seven songs on June 2007 which was released digitally. Songs included three covers, I Will Always Love You of Whitney Houston, Running Up That Hill of Kate Bush and Shakespeare Sister’s Stay. Four original songs were Amazing, All The Money In The World, It Can Only Get Better and Born To Love You Forever.
Another remarkable performance was posted on YouTube as Charice performed And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going by Dreamgirls. This paved her an invitation for Seoul Broadcasting System and performed in Star King, singing the song And I Am Telling You. Her performances received a standing ovation.
A music clip from Star King was re-posted in YouTube and was invited to perform in “The Ellen Degeneres Show” on November 28, 2007. On December 19, 2007, Charice sang And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going and I Will Always Love You on the same show and received her first standing ovation from the American audiences. On the same month, Charice went back to South Korea and received other standing ovations of I Will Survive and I Will Always Love You. A capella version of Beyonce’s Listen was also performed.
After her meritorious performances abroad, Charice went back to Philippines, now, under the contract of ABS-CBN. Charice instantly became a sensation and one of the most-sought singers of the country.
April 8, 2008 saw her invading Europe and guested in London’s “The Paul O’Grady Show”, performing her popularized songs. She earned two standing ovations, the first ever happened since the show was premiered. She had her stint in Los Angeles, California on April 26, 2008 during the 36th Anniversary Awards Benefit Dinner of STPA.
The following month, her birthday was held in Hawaii on Wowowee. She also appeared in The Oprah Winfrey Show singing I Have Nothing of Whitney Houston which leaves Oprah totally speechless. She received a standing ovation from the host and the audience. On May 17, Charice performed on the grand opening of MGM Grand at Foxwoods in Connecticut with other renowned artists. She received the same response, a standing ovation from the audience. She was the only one who performed that night to receive the ovation and was the first performer at the MGM Foxwoods to receive a standing ovation.
On May 23, Charice jammed with David Foster and friends in Madalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas. She had the honor of singing Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing and I Will Always Love You. She again received roaring standing ovations from each of her performances.
On July 20, Charice wowed the crowd on Andrea Bocelli’s birthday concert together with other international artists at the Theatre of Silence of Lajatico, Italy. Philippine Star Newspaper stated that Oprah is planning to do a documentary of Charice.
Charice already released her debut album entitled Charice on 2008.
